This 2017 Royal Mint Gold Proof Sovereign Set was issued to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the modern Sovereign.
The set contains five denominations: the Quintuple Sovereign (£5), Double Sovereign (£2), Sovereign (£1), Half Sovereign (50p) and Quarter Sovereign (25p). Each coin is struck in 22ct gold and finished to Proof standard.
The reverse of each coin features a remastered version of Benedetto Pistrucci's original 1817 St George and the Dragon design, complete with the Order of the Garter and its historic inscription. The Garter design had not appeared on Sovereigns since 1820. The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II's fifth official coinage portrait by Jody Clark.
With a limited edition presentation of just 750 sets, this is a particularly significant modern Sovereign collection commemorating 200 years of Pistrucci's iconic design.
